Syphilis Blood Test (IgG and IgM Antibodies)

About this test

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection which is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. In the UK it is usually transferred between people during unprotected sexual contact - vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Syphilis does present with symptoms but often these can be mild and sometimes go unnoticed. It is really important to get tested to halt the spread of the infection and to prevent serious health problems which can develop if syphilis is left untreated.

Symptoms in the primary stage (usually a couple of weeks after infection) include a small, painless sore (or chancre) at the site of the infection which, once healed, is usually followed by a blotchy red, or reddish-brown, rash on the body or commonly on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (secondary stage). If syphilis is left untreated it can progress to tertiary syphilis which can have profound health consequences including damage to the brain, central nervous and cardiovascular systems.

This test checks for the presence in the blood of IgG and IgM antibodies to the syphilis infection. It will detect a current or a previous infection, but won't be able to distinguish between the two. It is recommended to wait at least a week following possible infection to get tested - to give your body chance to produce the antibody response in the case of an active infection. You will likely need a confirmatory test (after up to 12 weeks) if your first test comes back negative.
