Urea is a waste product produced by the body when it breaks down proteins in the liver. Once the urea is made, it is transported to the kidneys, which filter it out of the blood and remove it from the body in the form of urine. Measuring the levels of urea in the blood can therefore reflect how well both the liver and the kidneys, are functioning. It is important to note that even if one kidney is severely damaged but the other is functioning perfectly, results may still return as normal.

Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from urea, a waste product created when your liver breaks down proteins. Your kidneys filter urea from your blood and remove it in urine, so BUN levels provide important information about both kidney function and protein metabolism. Elevated levels may indicate that your kidneys aren't filtering waste effectively, or could reflect dehydration, high protein intake, or increased protein breakdown in the body. Low levels are less common but can occur with severe liver disease or malnutrition.
