Urea and Electrolytes (urine)

About this test

Electrolytes are positively and negatively charged molecules called ions, that are found within the body's cells and extracellular fluids, including blood plasma. They are important because they are what your cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells.

Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body. Typically, tests for electrolytes measure levels of sodium, potassium and chloride in the body. An electrolyte test is rarely tested without the advice of a doctor or other healthcare practitioner beforehand.

In order for one of our medical doctors to best interpret the results of this test, we recommend that you also complete a Kidney Check.

Sodium is both an electrolyte and mineral. It helps regulate the water (inside and outside the body's cells) and electrolyte balance of the body. Sodium is also important in how nerves and muscles work.

Potassium is essential to regulate how the heart beats. It also helps move nutrients into cells and waste products out of cells and influences how nerves and muscles communicate.

Chloride, like sodium, helps maintain a balance of fluids in the body.

Creatinine is a chemical waste molecule that is generated from muscle metabolism. Urine creatinine levels can be used to measure how effectively your kidneys are functioning.
