Protein S

About this test

Protein S is a natural anticoagulant in the blood. It works by activating another protein C, which is plays an important role in blood clotting.

Some people can be deficient in protein S, whihc increases the risk of blood clot formation. This in turn can lead to a raised risk of venous thromboses, which can be life-threatening.

Whilst some cases of protein S deficiency are genetic, its levels can also be reduced by other factors such as having liver disease or a vitamin K deficiency – which may occur in warfarin users.

Who is this test for?

This test is for anyone who has a family history of a protein S deficiency, those who are concerned about their risk of venous thrombosis and those taking vitamin K who want to check that their protein S levels are stable.
