Protein C is a natural anticoagulant in the blood. Once activated, it works to cleave certain clotting factors to bring the body’s clotting process to a halt. However, some people are deficient in protein C, leading to abnormal clot formation which can increase the risk of venous thromboses such as DVT.
Whilst some cases of protein C deficiency are genetic, its levels are more commonly diminished by other factors such as having liver disease or a vitamin K deficiency – which may occur in warfarin users.
This test is for those who have a family history of protein C deficiency, those who are concerned about their risk of venous thrombosis and people who are taking vitamin K and want to check their protein C levels are stable.
