Homocysteine

About this test

Homocysteine is an amino acid your body uses to make protein and to build and maintain tissue. Excessive levels in your blood may increase your risk of stroke, heart disease, and even Alzheimer's.The importance of homocysteine as a marker for health and wellbeing is becoming clearer as it is found to be a better measure of risk for cardiovascular disease, especially in older peple, than other more familiar factors such as smoking, cholesterol or raised blood pressure.

The B vitamins especially B6, B12 and folic acid are important in the creation of homocysteine in the body as well as controlling its level. Insufficient B vitamins in the diet are one of the factors which may contribute to elevated homocysteine levels.

Many people can lower their homocyteine levels through changing their diet, in particular by reducing their protein intake and increasing the amount of B vitamins they consume. If they cannot improve homocysteine by diet alone, then vitamin B suypplements have been shown to be effective.

Who is this test for?

This homocysteine blood test is for people who want to find out whether they have a raised  risk of cardiovascular disease, especially if they know that they eat a diet low in B vitamins (vegetarians and vegans) or especially high in protein. It can also be used to monitor levels of homocysteine if you have already had a heart attack or stroke.
