Why take this test?
Testosterone is a hormone that causes male characteristics. For men, it regulates sex drive and controls bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, strength and the production of red blood cells and sperm. Heavy alcohol consumption, liver disease and steroid use can all negatively affect testosterone levels. In men, testosterone levels fall naturally after the age of 30 and for many men this decline is completely normal and causes no negative symptoms. For others, it can affect mood, motivation and libido as well as lead to a decrease in muscle mass. This age-related decline in testosterone is often referred to as the manopause or andropause. However, young men can also experience low testosterone levels which can affect their libido, fertility and abilty to gain muscle in the gym.
Women also produce testosterone but in much smaller quantities. Excessive testosterone in women can cause unwanted male characteristics such as facial hair. Elevated testosterone in women is commonly associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Checking your testosterone level is easy with a simple finger-prick blood test you can do at home. Our doctors will report on your result and advise you on what action you can take if your testosterone is abnormal.
Extended upper limit. Many testosterone tests will not measure testosterone levels above 52 nmol/L Our test will measure values up to 520 nmol/L. This is especially useful for men who are taking testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) or anabolic steroids and who expect to have supranormal levels of testosterone.
This blood test is for men and women who want to determine their testosterone levels. It is also useful for men suffering from erectile problems, infertility or delayed puberty and for women who wish to investigate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Testosterone is a male sex hormone which is produced in the testicles of men and, in much smaller amounts, in the ovaries of women. It is responsible for bone and muscle strength, as well as mood, energy and sexual function.
Testosterone levels decline with age and it is unusual to find naturally elevated levels in men. Low testosterone is more common than raised testosterone in the absence of supplementation.
In women, raised testosterone can result in male characteristics such as body hair, greater bulk, a deeper voice and acne - all symptoms of polycystic ovaries, a condition in which elevated testosterone is commonly seen.
