Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) Blood Test

About this test

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are found in people whose immune system cannot distinguish between its own healthy cells and those of foreign invaders, giving rise to an immune attack on proteins in the nucleus of the body's own cells (hence 'antinuclear').

Antibodies that are directed against the body's own cells are referred to as auto-antibodies and the tendency of the immune system to attack its own body is called autoimmunity. The presence of antinuclear antibodies in the blood is an indicator of autoimmunity and this test is used to help investigate autoimmune disease.

The detection of antinuclear antibodies is most commonly seen in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, ANAs are also seen in other autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren's syndrome

Tests Included

Antinuclear antibodies are produced by the immune system when it fails to distinguish between its own cells and foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Antinuclear antibodies attack proteins inside the body's own healthy cells and cause symptoms such as inflammation, joint pain and fatigue.

A high level of antinuclear antibodies in the blood may indicate an autoimmune disorder but alone can’t be used to diagnose a particular autoimmune disorder.
