Creatine kinase, CK, is an enzyme made by muscle cells.
When muscle cells are injured or diseased, creatine kinase enzymes leak out of the cells and enter the bloodstream.
People who have a high muscle mass will generally have higher CK levels than those who do not. Strenuous exercise can also increase CK.
Other forms of muscle damage, such as from a fall, a car accident, surgery, or a shot (injection), can increase CK levels too.
There are other reasons why CK levels may rise. Several drugs, including cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), can damage muscle and increase CK. Drinking too much alcohol slightly increases CK as well.

CK (creatine kinase) is a muscle enzyme which signifies muscle cell damage and death. CK levels tend to be higher in people with greater muscle mass.
The level of CK in the blood is measured to assess muscle damage - it can rise rapidly after muscle trauma, but will subside as the damage repairs. If CK continues to rise it indicates that muscle damage is not being repaired. If you have been to the gym the day before your blood test you may well exhibit raised levels of CK.
