Aspartate Aminotransferase

About this test

Aspartate Aminotransferase, AST, is an enzyme found in red blood cells, liver, heart, muscle tissue, pancreas, and kidneys.

Low levels of Aspartate Aminotransferase are normally found in the blood. When body tissue or an organ such as the heart or liver is diseased or damaged, additional Aspartate Aminotransferase is released into the bloodstream. The amount of Aspartate Aminotransferase in the blood is directly related to the extent of the tissue damage.

Measuring AST helps to aid diagnosis of conditions such as hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Who is this test for?

Our Aspartate Aminotransferase test is for those wanting to diagnose a liver disease, those wanting to monitor the effects of treatment for a liver disease, or for those who want to investigate if any of their medications are significantly harming their liver.

Enzymes

Aspartate transferase (AST) is an enzyme created mainly by the cells of the liver and the heart. Any injury to the heart or liver, and other bodily tissues, will cause AST to be released into the bloodstream. Levels can be raised following a heart attack or from liver damage caused by alcohol, drugs or viruses (hepatitis).

AST can also be elevated after vigorous exercise.
