Follicle Stimulating Hormone

About this test

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, FSH, is released by the anterior pituitary gland.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone is a hormone of the reproductive system and in women, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone stimulates production of eggs and a hormone called oestradiol during the first half of the menstrual cycle. In men, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone stimulates production of sperm.

A Follicle-Stimulating Hormone test may be performed when certain reproductive or pituitary disorders are suspected. A Follicle-Stimulating Hormone test, along with other tests, may also be done to confirm menopause.

Other reasons to perform a Follicle-Stimulating Hormone test is when the is a suspected case of polycystic ovary disease, ovarian cysts, irregular vaginal bleeding, or infertility, in children who start sexual development at a very young age, in men who have infertility or in men who do not have testicles or whose testicles are underdeveloped.

Hormones

Follicle Stimulating Hormone is produced in the pituitary gland and is important for women in the production of eggs by the ovaries and for men in the production of sperm. Levels of FSH rise in women as egg production declines, therefore raised FSH often coincides with the onset of the menopause and is a measure of ovarian reserve.

Elevated FSH in women indicates reduced egg supply whereas low levels can signal that you are not ovulating or are pregnant.

Levels of FSH in men rise with age, but can also indicate testicular damage and reduced sperm production. Low levels of FSH are detected when men are not producing sperm.
