Hepatitis B Test

About this test

Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, also known as HBV, can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.

The HBsAg, or Hepatitis B Surface Antigen as it is also referred to, can be detected in an infected person's blood on average of 4 weeks (range 1-8 weeks) after exposure to the virus. The Hepatitis B virus is a DNA virus, meaning that its genetic material is made up of deoxyribonucleic acids. It consists of a core particle (central portion) and a surrounding envelope (outer coat). The core is made up of DNA and the core antigen (HBcAg). The envelope contains the surface antigen (HBsAg).

This test looks at the antigens that are present in the blood, and uses them as markers in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with suspected viral hepatitis. The test is also 100% private, confidential and fast - taking just one working day for results, compared to up to 2 weeks for GP or NHS checks.

Who is this test for?

This test is for anyone who thinks they may be infected with the Hepatitis B virus.
