Prostate Check Plus

The Prostate Check Plus blood test measures the ratio of Free PSA to Total PSA. It is a more accurate indicator of prostate cancer than a PSA test.

PSA is a protein which is produced by the prostate gland. Most of the PSA which is released into the bloodstream is bound to proteins, however, a proportion of PSA is not bound ("Free") A lower ratio of "Free" to Total PSA can be indicative of Prostate Cancer.

Knowing this ratio can be a useful factor in identifying the early signs of Prostate Cancer as it helps to differentiate between raised PSA levels due to a benign prostatic hypertrophy (an enlarged prostate) and Prostate Cancer.

Who is this blood test for

The Prostate Check Plus blood test is for men who are experiencing the common symptoms of Prostate Cancer, or who may be at higher risk due to their age, ethnic origin, or family history.

It is also a useful follow-up to a raised PSA test and can indicate whether further investigation (such as a biopsy) is necessary. However, it is also possible to have a normal PSA result and an abnormal ratio of Free to Total PSA. For this reason we recommend the Prostate Check Plus as our standard prostate test. Annual testing is recommended for all men over 40 years old.

Prostate Cancer does not always produce symptoms and can therefore be difficult to diagnose.

  • Difficulty passing urine.
  • More frequent urination, especially at night.
  • Rushing to the toilet, but feeling like the bladder has not fully emptied.
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Blood in the urine (this is not common).
  • A weak urine flow.

What's included

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein which is released into the blood by the prostate gland. An enlarged gland is often associated with higher levels of PSA. PSA levels can also rise with age, with prostatitis (infected prostate) or even vigorous exercise and ejaculation.

The PSA test in isolation is not considered by itself to be a totally accurate tool in diagnosing Prostate Cancer, as levels can be raised due to benign prostate disorders. Raised levels of PSA can lead to unnecessary biopsies and intervention which may decrease quality of life. However, a raised PSA level should always be investigated further.

It is useful to monitor PSA over time so that any change in what is normal for you can be investigated speedily.

This test measures the amount of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) which is not bound to proteins in your blood. Examining the relationship between bound and unbound (free) PSA can help distinguish between Prostate Cancer and benign prostate disease when total PSA is raised or borderline.
