Oestradiol & Testosterone

This blood test is to measure oestradiol and testosterone levels in the blood.

Oestradiol is a steroid hormone and accounts for 80% of a female body's oestrogen. It is secreted by the ovaries and is responsible for the development and maintenance of reproductive structures, including the fat distribution, preparing the follicle in the ovary for the release of an egg, getting ready for fertility and helping to maintain bone density.

Testosterone is a hormone that causes male characteristics. For men, it regulates the sex drive and controls bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, strength and the production of red blood cells and sperm. Heavy alcohol use, liver disease and using steroids can cause a decrease in testosterone levels. Women taking oestrogen therapy, however, may have increased testosterone levels.

This blood test checks for unusual levels of oestradiol and testosterone, which may affect sexual libido, erectile problems and infertility in men and 'male characteristics' in women such as excessive hair or explain abnormal periods, heavy bleeding or symptoms of menopause.

Oestradiol blood test results below 44 pmol/L are expressed as <44 pmol/L (less than 44 pmol/L) due to the sensitivity of the testing assay.

Oestradial is a female steroid hormone which is produced in the ovaries of women and to a much lesser extent in the testes of men. It is responsible for the female reproductive system as well as the growth of breast tissue and bone thickness. Oestradiol declines with age, culminating in the menopause when the ovaries stop producing eggs.

Raised oestradiol in women can cause acne, constipation, loss of sex drive and depression as well as raising the risk of uterine and breast cancer.

Oestradiol can also be raised in men due to too much fat (which is oestradiol producing) or in relation to testosterone levels which have declined with age. Raised oestradiol can cause the growth of breast tissue, the loss of libido and infertility in men.

Low levels of oestradiol in women can lead to osteoporosis, problems with the menstrual cycle and fertility as well as fatigue and depression.

Testosterone is a male sex hormone which is produced in the testicles of men and, in much smaller amounts, in the ovaries of women. It is responsible for bone and muscle strength, as well as mood, energy and sexual function. Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, so that raised testosterone in men is unusual. A testosterone test is more likely to discover low levels.

In women, raised testosterone can result in male characteristics such as more body hair, more bulk, a deeper voice and acne - all symptoms of polycystic ovaries.

In men (and to some extent, women) low testosterone levels can affect, mood, sleep, energy levels, muscle mass and libido.
