Our Hip Check Test will measure the levels of chromium and cobalt in your blood and identify whether they are at a safe or toxic level.

Depending on the type of hip replacement performed, either a metal ball is used in an artificial joint, or alternatively the joint surfaces are replaced with metal inserts. The metal mixtures used in both contain both chromium and cobalt.

As hip replacements wear down, metal particles can be released from the artificial hip and react with the soft tissues (muscle and ligaments) and consequently enter the blood stream producing toxic levels of chromium and cobalt in the blood.

Who is this blood test for

Our Hip Check test is for people who have had a hip replacement using a DePuy ASR artificial hip, as they may have been exposed to dangerous levels of chromium and cobalt.

There are no definitive symptoms of chromium and cobalt toxicity, however if you have had a DePuy ASR hip replacement and/or are experiencing pain, we urge you to take our Hip Check
