A simple blood test to establish the presence of the Hepatitis C virus.
Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect and severely damage the liver. It can be passed from person to person through sharing needles for drug use and, less commonly, through sex.
People with early infection may not as yet have developed antibody levels high enough that the test can measure. In addition, some people may lack the (immune) response necessary for the test to work well. In these cases, research-based tests such as PCR may be considered.
Anti-HCV can be found in 7 out of 10 people when symptoms begin, and in about 9 out of 10 people within 3 months after symptoms begin. However, it's important to note that many people who have hepatitis C show no symptoms whatsoever.
Using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test it's possible to find HCV within 1 to 3 weeks after being infected with the virus. That's because this biological process actually amplifies the DNA molecules for a clearer picture.
This test is for anyone who thinks they may be infected with the Hepatitis C virus.
More often than not, you would only display symptoms of Hepatitis C once the liver had been noticeably damaged. They include a high temperature similar to flu, lethargy and depression.
