A test to determine whether you are infected with Group B Streptococcus bacteria during pregnancy.
There are many concerns for mums-to-be during every phase of pregnancy, as well shortly after birth. Our Group B Streptococcus test is designed to protect newborn babies from possible infection from the Group B Streptococcus bacteria.
A positive test may lead to antibiotics being administered during delivery to protect the baby if the mother is considered to be in a high-risk group.
This test is ideal for pregnant women (between 35 and 37 weeks) wishing to protect their newborn baby from Group B Streptococcus infection.
There are no signs that a mother is a carrier of Group B Streptococcus. In newborns, however, early symptoms can appear within 24 hours of delivery and up to seven days afterwards. They include floppiness, breathing difficulties, feeding problems, abnormal temperature, fast or slow heartbeat, and rapid or slow breathing. Late Group B Streptococcus appear between 1 week and 3 months after birth, and is much more serious; 10% of affected babies die while 20% suffer from conditions such as cerebral palsy, blindness or learning difficulties.
