A Glucose Tolerance Test blood test or GTT is used to screen for and diagnose type 2 diabetes.
A fasting blood glucose test is performed after an 8 to 10 hr fast. Then glucose drink (75gm) is given and blood and urine samples taken every 30 mins for 2 hours.
Above-normal blood glucose levels can be used to diagnose type 2 diabetes or high blood glucose during pregnancy (gestational diabetes).
It may also be useful to measure Insulin levels. Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas that moves glucose from the bloodstream into cells.
