Alanine Aminotransferase

Alanine aminotransferase, ALT, is an enzyme that is present in liver and heart cells.

Alanine aminotransferase is released into blood when the liver or heart is damaged.

Alanine aminotransferase levels are elevated with liver damage or heart damage for example, from a heart attack. Some medications can also raise Alanine aminotransferase levels.

Alanine aminotransferase is also called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).

Alanine Transferase (ALT) is an enzyme which is produced by the liver and can indicate liver damage caused by alcohol, drugs or viruses (hepatitis). Small amounts of ALT are normal, but raised levels may mean that your liver is inflamed.

Raised levels can also be caused by recent vigorous exercise.
