Essential Fatty Acids Check (Omega 3 and 6)

About this test

As human diets have evolved from those of hunter gatherers to ones based on modern agriculture, the amount of Omega-6 fatty acids we consume has increased dramatically - we now consume many more times the amount of Omega-6 than Omega-3. Omega-3 is the building block for inflammation-reducing hormones, while hormones built from Omega-6 tend to increase inflammation in the body.

The resulting ratio in the West of around 15:1 (15 times more Omega-6 in the cell membranes compared to Omega-3) is believed to contribute to a number of inflammatory diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. An ideal ratio is thought to be 2:1 and this is normally achieved by changes in diet and by supplementing with Omega-3 rich fish oils.

This test checks the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in the cell membranes and highlights any irregular levels.

Who is this test for?

This test is ideal for anyone wanting to know their Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio. It is especially useful if monitoring type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
