Sugar Check Plus

About this test

Many anti-ageing specialists are now focussing their attention on the role of sugar and refined carbohydrates as a major cause of premature ageing in the western world. It is already known that diabetes accelerates the ageing process, but curernt thinking is that even moderate consumpton of sugar and starchy foods causes a chain reaction in our bodies leading to advanced glycation end products (AGE's) which cause damage to skin, blood vessels and our organs.

The Medichecks Sugar Check blood test is a test for pre-diabetic or diabetic condition. Type 2 diabetes is a common metabolic disease which is now affecting younger and younger people. Caused by consuming too much sweet and starchy food together with a sedentary lifestyle, type 2 diabetes can develop into a serious health condition raising the risk of heart disease, cancer, kidney disease and blindness.

This blood test is for individuals who wish to monitor an already diagnosed diabetic condition or for those who believe that they may be at risk for diabetes and wish to take preventative action.  It is also useful for people who wish to control sugar as part of an anti-ageing strategy. The test, in identifying raised blood glucose and insulin levels can help to diagnose a pre-diabetic condition as well as type 2 diabetes.

The fasting blood glucose test measures the amount of sugar in the blood after a long period without food (preferably overnight).  A raised level can indicate insulin resistance and diabetes.

The glycosylated haemoglobin test (HBA1c) blood test gives an idea of how well the blood sugar level has been controlled in the previous 8 weeks or so. Haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. A small part of it is bound to glucose to form glycosylated haemoglobin. In normal people 3-8% of  haemoglobin is glycosylated but in people with uncontrolled diabetes levels can be as high as 8-20%.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas in response to the food that we eat. One of its main roles is to remove sugar from the blood and store it in the cells for future energy use.  Raised insulin levels can be a sign of insulin resistance which occurs when the cells fail to respond to the normal actions of insulin. Insulin resistance often remains undetected but can be a sign of type 2 diabetes.

Leptin is a hormone produced by our fat cells which regulates the amoiunt of fat stored in our body, mostly by affecting hunger. In obese people leptin levels can rise so that affected people are in a constant state of hunger. Leptin levels can be reduced through fasting and exercise as well as by gettting a good night's sleep.

Insulin is an important metabolic hormone. Made in your pancreas, insulin is produced after you have eaten in order to move the sugar from your blood into your cells for future energy use. If we eat too much sugar and starchy foods, our bodies are flooded with insulin and over time our cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, leaving high levels of sugar and insulin in our bloodstreams.

Raised insulin means that you are becoming insulin resistant which is a pre-diabetic condition.
