Our Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time test is a haematology blood test used to monitor clotting in the blood.
The test measures the speed at which blood clots in the body are formed, through a pathway known as the intrinsic pathway. The test measuring the speed of clotting in the extrinsic pathway is called prothrombin time and is normally used in conjunction with the aPTT test to find the overall speed of blood clotting.
Prolonged aPTT may indicate a clotting factor deficiency, antiphospholipid syndrome and many other conditions. The test can also be performed to monitor the effects of the drug heparin, which can slow down clotting time.
Our Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) test is for those with a family history of clotting disorders, those who want to investigate a potential diagnosis and for those taking heparin who want to monitor its effects.
