Testicular Cancer Check

About this test

Cancer screens and cancer tests are for people wanting a routine cancer check maybe because they have a family history of a particular type of cancer or simply for peace of mind. This test measures proteins in the blood which can be raised in cases of testicular cancer.

This blood test can help identify signs of cancer in the bloodstream. It is a prevention test, the result of which does not in any way constitute a medical diagnosis and is not a replacement for recognised routine cancer tests. In this case it should be used together with a physical examination of the testicals.

Cancer tumour markers are not designed to be used as screening tests and there are limitations in their use as such. They are designed to monitor condtions that have already been diagnosed or to monitor whether a cancer has returned. There can be a high incidence of false positives as conditions other than cancer can cause tumour markers to be elevated.

Who is this test for?

This test is for men of all ages as testicular cancer can affect young men as well as those in middle age. If you have any symptoms of cancer, such as a swelling or lump in the testicle you should see a doctor rather than to try to diagnose it yourself.

Important Information

Please see your doctor if you are suffering any unusual symptoms which persist - do not use these tests to self-diagnose. Tumour markers are most useful when viewed in conjunction with a clinical examination. Results do not constitute a diagnosis of cancer and markers are often tested to monitor treatment when cancer has already been diagnosed, or to check that it has not returned. Cancer markers can be elevated in benign conditions and results often produce false positives. Sometimes tumour markers can be normal even though cancer is present. Please make sure that you think carefully about the risks and benefits before taking this test.

Our tests are not a substitute for seeing your doctor, especially if you are suffering symptoms. Our doctors will interpret your results based on the information you have provided, but will not diagnose, consult or provide any treatment. You will be advised to see your doctor for any necessary follow-up action.

Cancer Tumour Markers

Alpha Feto Protein is a protein which is made by immature liver cells of the foetus. In adults it is a marker which is primarily used in the detection of liver cancer or cancer of the testes. It can also be raised in cancers of the stomach, bowel, lungs or breast.

Slighlty elevated levels can be seen in people with liver damage.
