Liver Cancer Screen

About this test

Cancer screens and cancer tests are for people wanting a routine cancer check maybe because they have a family history of a particular type of cancer or simply for peace of mind.

As cancer can have many signs or symptoms, we recommend that the tests are carried out in conjunction with one of our Health Checks.

This blood test has been designed to aid the identification of cancer in the bloodstream. It is a prevention test, the result of which does not in any way constitute a medical diagnosis and is not a replacement for recognised routine cancer tests such as mammography, colonoscopy / faecal occult blood testing, PAP smear / bimanual pelvic exam, or any physical exam.

Important Information

This test contains a tumour marker test. Please see your doctor if you are suffering any unusual symptoms which persist - do not use these tests to self-diagnose. Tumour markers are most useful when viewed in conjunction with a clinical examination. Results do not constitute a diagnosis of cancer and markers are often tested to monitor treatment when cancer has already been diagnosed, or to check that it has not returned. Cancer markers can be elevated in benign conditions and results often produce false positives. Sometimes tumour markers can be normal even though cancer is present. Please make sure that you think carefully about the risks and benefits before taking this test.

Our tests are not a substitute for seeing your doctor, especially if you are suffering symptoms. Our doctors will interpret your results based on the information you have provided, but will not diagnose, consult or provide any treatment. You will be advised to see your doctor for any necessary follow-up action.

Tumour Markers

Alpha Feto Protein is a protein which is made by immature liver cells of the foetus. In adults it is a marker which is primarily used in the detection of liver cancer or cancer of the testes. It can also be raised in cancers of the stomach, bowel, lungs or breast.

Slighlty elevated levels can be seen in people with liver damage.

Carcino embryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycoprotein that is normally found in small amounts in the cells. In cases of cancer, predominantly bowel cancer but also breast, lung, pancreatic and stomach cancers, levels of CEA can be elevated. It is generally used to monitor an already diagnosed cancer or to check that cancer has not returned.

An elevated result is not necessarily diagnostic of cancer (CEA can also be raised in other non-malignant conditions) and it does not indicate where a cancer is located. However, an elevated result should be investigated, especially if symptoms are present.

Its use as a screening test is not established. Like other tests for tumour markers, a change in level over time may be more significant than the absolute level at a given point in time.

Ferritin is a protein which stores iron in your cells for your body to use later. Measuring ferritin levels gives us a good indication of the amount of iron stored in your body.

Low levels of ferritin can indicate anaemia which can be caused by excessive or chronic bleeding, poor absorption of iron or too little iron in the diet.

Raised ferritin levels can indicate iron overload syndrome (haemochromatosis) or any kind of liver damage. It is also a marker of infection and inflammation.
