The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) detects whether there is blood present in a stool sample. Whilst the accuracy of this test is improved compared to the older faecal occult blood test (FOBT) there are still issues which can affect the result. Conditions such as piles or haemorrhoids can lead to blood being present in the stool, and so can cause a positive FIT result in people who do not have bowel cancer (a false positive). A positive result may lead to invasive procedures such as colonoscopy being used to investigate the bowel and identify whether bowel cancer is present.
A negative result does not rule out bowel cancer. The test can return a false negative if there is an underlying tumour which is not releasing significant amounts of blood into the bowel.
If you are worried about bowel cancer, or have symptoms such as a change in bowel habit, blood in the stool, or weight loss, then we recommend that you discuss these with your GP.
We recommend this screening test is used in line with guidance from public health authorities in the UK.
The NHS currently offers screening for bowel cancer every two years to adults aged between 60 and 74 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and from 50 to 74 in Scotland.
