Feeling all the time, struggling with your weight or battling sleepless nights? It's easy to attribute these symptoms to growing older, but dismiss them at your peril- they could be caused by a problem with your thyroid. And if left untreated, it can lead to serious health issues.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck, which is responsible for regulating the hormones that control metabolism. Although tiny, this 4cm-long gland has such a powerful influence on the body that, if something goes wrong, it can cause debilitating problems- and women are particularly at risk. In fact, we're up to eight times more likely to be affected than men.
