Calprotectin is a stable protein that is released into the faeces when neutrophils gather at the site of any gastro intestinal (GI) tract inflammation.
The faecal calprotectin test has a relatively high specificity and sensitivity (approximately 90%) for distinguishing between non-inflammatory bowel disorders (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome) and inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). Calprotectin can provide a non-invasive, inexpensive and objective method for assessing patients for additional possible invasive procedures e.g.colonoscopy or imaging studies.
Calprotectin is regularly raised in active IBD and the test is useful for monitoring the disease and the effectiveness of medication. It is also elevated in some cases of GI tract malignancy (e.g. colorectal cancer).
This stool test is for individuals who have persistently runny and watery stools who wish to rule out IBS before undergoing more invasive and costly procedures. In addition it is used by people who have positive diagnoses of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and wish to monitor their condition.
