Apolipoprotein A1

About this test

Apolipoprotein A1, or ApoA1 is a major protein that is a component of high-density lipoprotein, or HDL cholesterol.

ApoA1 works by pulling fats, such as cholesterol, out of cells from all over the body, then bringing them to the liver to be destroyed. One part of the body that ApoA1 clears cholesterol from is within the walls of blood vessels. Testing for ApoA1 can help to predict a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease.

Low levels of ApoA1 can be found in individuals with genetic disorders such as Tangier disease and can also be indicative of coronary heart disease, particularly if increased levels of Apolipoprotein B are found.

High levels of ApoA1 can be protective for diseases such as atherosclerosis and heart disease.
