	Glutathione is a tripeptide, or protein, made up of three amino acids. Glutathione reductase plays an important role in protecting haemoglobin, red cell enzymes, and biological cell membranes against oxidative damage. The activity of glutathione reductase is used as indicator for oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or easily repair the resulting damage. Oxidative damage has been implicated in the cause of many diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's and has an impact on the body's aging process. External factors such as pollution, sunlight and smoking also trigger the production of free radicals. To counteract oxidative stress, the body produces an armoury of antioxidants to defend itself. It's the job of antioxidants to neutralise or 'mop up' free radicals that can harm our cells.
